Definition
In general, impairment designates a psychological, physical or anatomical condition, as opposed to disability , which "results from the interaction between persons with impairments and attitudinal and environmental barriers that hinders their full and effective participation in society on an equal basis with others".
Remark
Article 1 of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities mentions four types of impairment: intellectual impairment , mental impairment , physical impairment , sensory impairment . Note that "impairment" and "disability " are in general not interchangeable.For the WHO definition of impairment, see "Towards a Common Language for Functioning, Disability and Health ", p.10
